With the power of imazethapyr, Phantom 240 SL herbicide puts an affordable end to broadleaf weeds. For use in pea, soybean, dry bean, alfalfa and other broadleaf crops, Phantom brings the same active ingredient as Pursuit® to market, but at a fair price.
Broad-spectrum weed control: Phantom keeps tough weeds – and spending – under control.
Why Phantom? Phantom is a Group 2 herbicide that contains the ALS inhibitor imazethapyr as its active ingredient. Phantom is readily absorbed through both leaf and root uptake, and translocated in the plant to inhibit amino acid production and cell division. Plant growth is inhibited, and a few days after application, chlorosis and terminal bud death become evident. Leaves and stems become yellow and purple, and root growth may be inhibited. Competition to the crop is quickly reduced, although complete plant death is relatively slow.
Group 2 mode of action: Group 2 herbicides are well suited to broadleaf crops.
Early weed control: Phantom is applied early, up the 4 leaf stage for most weeds, to eliminate competition early. And with soil activity, Phantom carries on protecting your crop from a second flush of shallow germinating broadleaf weeds that may emerge shortly following application.
Easy to use: Phantom is conveniently packaged in a 3.3-litre jug that treats 40 acres of pea or 26 acres of soybean.
Application and Use Guidelines
Crop staging: For best results spray when weeds are in the seedling stage.
| Crop | Crop stage | Soil zone |
|---|---|---|
| Field pea | Up to the 6th trifoliate | Black and grey wooded soils |
| Dry bean (pinto, pink and red) | Up to and including the 2nd trifoliate leaf stage | Black, grey wooded and irrigated brown soils |
| Soybean (Manitoba only) | 1 to 3 leaf stage | N/A |
| Seedling alfalfa (forage or seed) | Apply after the 1st trifoliate leaf stage | Black, grey wooded and irrigated brown soils |
| Established alfalfa (seed production only)1 | Apply before alfalfa reaches 30 cm (12 inches) | N/A |
| Chickling vetch (for seed)/grassy pea | 5 to 7 leaf stage | N/A |
Convenient rates: A typical rate is 85 mL/acre (40 acres per jug).
Cover ground fast: Apply Phantom in 40 to 160 L/acre of water. A nonionic surfactant, such as Agral® 90 or Ag-Surf®, must be added to the spray solution at a rate of 2.5 litres of surfactant per 1,000 litres of spray solution.
Crop rotations: As with the Pursuit label, research studies have shown the following crops can be safely grown in black and grey wooded soil zones the year following application: barley, spring wheat, lentil, alfalfa, field pea and imazethapyr and imazamox tolerant canola (e.g. canola varieties with the Clearfield® trait).
Conduct a field bioassay (a test strip grown to maturity) the year BEFORE growing any crop other than those listed above.
Mixing instructions: There are no tank-mixes registered on the Phantom label. To check for other possible tank-mix possibilities, consult provincial guidelines and other herbicide labels.
Weeds controlled: Phantom eliminates weed competition when applied up to the fourth true leaf stage of the weed.
Check label as weeds controlled vary by crop.

Crop rotations: Field corn, imazethapyr tolerant corn, soybean, winter wheat, spring wheat, spring barley, kidney bean, cranberry bean, Dutch brown bean, black bean, yellow eye bean, white bean, lima bean, adzuki bean, processing pea and imazethapyr tolerant canola may be planted the season following a Phantom application.
